ASL intro for Managers
Round table bITa/Maturity

ASL offer a framework for application management that is based on the best practises of professionals with years of experience. The model is developed in such a way that it guarantees the optimal ICT support for business processes. In this way you can concentrate on the business core. ASL limits itself to the giving of guidelines for the organising of processes, leaving the organising of the business. By doing this, the framework is generally applicable within ICT services, independent to the size of your organisation.

Application Management, a necessity
The quality of your primary business processes is directly related to the quality of your ICT support. An application does not support the business processes on its own, but is a single, inseparable part of it. With this the ICT became a production factor, and with that came the growing need for a higher form of professionalism. Organisations require responsibilities for results and guarantees in their field of application management(application control).
The costs of application management is substantial, an estimated two thirds of the total cost of the lifecycle of an application.

The condition of an application is an critical success factor. Besides that, there is a necessity to start quicker with market related developments. This means that the necessary systems and services have to be delivered quicker.
Application management does not stand on its own anymore, but as part of a domain where the individual application and even more, the organisation exceeds. Uniformization of the handled terminology and the fine-tuning of the organisation exceeding application management processes will play an favourable role.

ASL, Applications Only
In the controlling of informatics systems there are three control areas that can be recognised:
Functional control; the management on behalf of the system owner on the user side of the information systems.
Application control; management of the control, the maintenance and the renewal (programmes and database structures) in a professional way.

Technical control; the control of the technical infrastructures (computer centre, network-and workstation control).
Where ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) has became a general acceptable standard to organise technical control, the Application Services Library offers an framework for the organisation of application management.

ASL Framework: processes in application management
The processes in the ASL-framework can be subdivided by answering the following questions:
1. Is the point of view the 'service' or the 'application'?
2. Is it about operational, tactical or technical processes?
